We practice what we talk, but we are human too…

Posted by Ashish on September 8th, 2006

I received a comment on one of my blog-post from Sameer who came for an interview with us 10 days back talking about his post-interview experiences at Tekriti. His comment goes as:

I don’t know whether I should I write here or not but I posting my comment here. I am writing here just after reading these Mountain high and ideal talks.
My experience with Tekriti Software is not good or can say pathetic.
My Experience-

28-Aug-2006(A Call from Tekriti Software)

28-Aug-2006 was the first day when I saw Tekriti Software the reason is I had call from Tekriti Software for Written test and Interview. I cleared written and interviewed by Mr. Ashish (I think it was u). After interview Mr. Ashish assured me to disclose result in a week.

A week has passed

That week has passed I didn’t get any mail from Tekriti Software. May be the reason I couldn’t clear the interview. But I think I deserve result what ever it was.

I wanted to know the Result

I want to know result what ever It was .So I drafted a mail to Ashima on 4-Sept-2006 and requested for my result ASAP. Today is 8th September and still I didn’t get any reply from Tekriti Software or Ashima.

I was seriously disappointed after this whole scenario. I think a promise should fulfilled may be one can say promises are made to be broken. I think in Software Industry a promise is every thing. … I can write more but ..I am ending it here in the hope … that I think here is no need to write what it is …

I immediately showed the comment to Ashima and Kirti who look after the recruitment and was told that a regret email was indeed sent out to you.

Sameer - let me thank you for the comment. I have always been a fan of people giving feedback - it pleases me more if it is constructive. If we had indeed made a mistake there, I would have never known if you hadn’t commented. I just want to tell you that we indeed practice what we talk about but there can be delays at times because of other factors. After all, we are human too…

And, BTW, Sameer - it might be a good idea to check your spam folder, just in case.

    Dear Ashish,

I am glad somebody spoke up against what you preach vs. what you practice. After reading more than perfect comments in your praise on your blog, I hesitated to speak up on how you did not keep your commitments in your dealings with me. After your visit from US, you emailed me that you will call me (phone meeting) on July 12 at 12:30 PM for potential Tekriti expansion. I scheduled time off from another very important meeting to be available for your call. I waited and got your call around 12:40 PM that you want to reschedule the phone meeting as you have some family emergency. I understood. Things happen. And you rescheduled the meeting to July 14 at 12:30 PM. Again I took time off from my work to receive your call. I waited to receive your call for more than an hour. Till today, I have not received any email or reason for such unprofessional behavior. I did not email you because I usually don’t do business with people who cannot keep their commitments.

Although it is not my style to give critical feedback publicly, but in your blog, you wrote that you have always been a fan of people giving feedback, I made up my mind to give my feedback to you and make you my fan.

My constructive suggestion – “If you can’t keep your promise don’t make one otherwise it will hurt your credibility. Ashish, you are very energetic person who has a great passion for what he does and I want to see you very successful”

  2. Ashish Says:

Jatinder, point well taken. I agree that it’s my fault - let me try to make it up by sending you an email with the explanations, at least.

Thanks for continuing to read my blog - even after that goof-up.

    Jatinder,
If you need to prepare for an interview visite http://www.tekpool.com or maybe if you have questions to discuss visit the discussion forums at http://www.tekpool.com/forums

“To err is human, to forgive divine” :)

  5. Siddharth Saha Says:

Yes, mistakes do happen and sometimes. And people do have the right to complain. My comments are always biased towards the author of this blog but if incase I am involved in a matter and the same thing happens with me, then I too complain and I also get complains many-a-times and try to improve. After all, life is all about improvement.

I would also want to answer people complianing-
    “Improvemnet begins with I”.

    !!
I thought i was the only one with this experience from tekriti front (Gaurav Bhatnagar in my case) and attributed it to some urgent task…Gaurav did not show up for 2 one-on-one meetings scheduled by himself! He did sent a mail a few days later to explain no show after first meeting but there was not even an explanation for the no show in second meeting!

BTW, the meeting was to develop an adhoc startups job posting Engine for venture woods for which both of us had volunteered. After the 2 no shows, the enthu fizzled out and it never got done. Blog comment section is being used for job postings now.

I do understand that when working with cross-continental teams, avoiding overlaps and fulfilling all appointments can be rather tough. However, it doesent take much to cancel/reschedule or even if not that, atleast send a follow up mail.

Thanks for the comments on this so far. This only pushes us to improve and know that ‘not having time or any other problems’ is not the excuse to be given to anybody. It’s definitely good to be criticized at times, for a reality check. Please keep voicing your opinion - you are helping us by doing that.

Siddhartha / Nagendra - thanks for the kind words. It’s a bit hard to be criticized publicly but we were partly responsible for that.

    :-)

  8. Naveen Kumar Says:

I may be late to comment on this, But i just want to say getting feed back from people is not bad. It makes us to imporve in one way or the other like correcting our mistakes, blah blah blah….
Ashish I think its better not to show up your mistake so openly , as it leaves a big question mark in the minds of so many people who try to opt for tekriti in the near feature or later.

May be you should have shown it the people in the office for the people looking after that.

  9. Startups.in/India Says:

Naveen, I think Ashish did the right thing by accepting the mistake(in case there was one) publicly. Sure, few negative comments might deter prospective clients but not when the person/company in question openly regrets for the mistakes and promises to improve.

C’mon who doesn’t do mistakes. What we don’t see is people/companies realizing and accepting them while at the same time resolving to do better.

  10. Prashant Says:

    Hi Ashish,

    For Jatinder and Sameer,

I was verbally informed (not at Tekriti, this event is from 10 years ago) as being selected and told that since the HR head had left for the day, I would get my appointment letter the next day. That passed, a week too, later I became nervous and went and asked and was coolly told that somebody else had been recruited in my place. This was no startup but a well established co.

As somebody who employs others, I can understand your situation and your inability to give a feedback (no excuses for not giving one). I have been guilty of the same offence quite a few times. All I can say is it takes courage to put something up on what slowly is becoming a medium for self congratulation and credibility marketing.

    Hats off !!!

  11. Ashish Says:

Naveen - I did think about whether I wanted to highlight that or not. In fact, if I wanted, I could have blocked the harsher comments on this post too. But as Nagendra said - I still think I did the right thing by this. If nothing, it will help everybody at Tekriti become more responsible when they read this one.

Thanks Prashant - I definitely feel better after hearing that :-)

  12. Sameer Mishra Says:

    ya i had a littele Email-Chat with Ashima …
we have Discussed few points and at last i sent a mail to finish it.

for Ashish — its Appreciable that you regrated.Hope some other would not Suffer as did i :-)

for Startups.in — regratting is not a solution Man(Or WoMan since its not clear with your name ;-) ) .the thing we should assure that we would not repeat it future.

for Prashant — Prashent!! My situation was a little from you .. but thanks for comment

  13. Ashish Says:

Sameer - everything is right but I will give just a suggestion - don’t ’suffer’ so easily. Let me be very frank - most companies there do not disclose results in case it’s not positive and it’s not that easy also to give feedback when you are having so many interviews every day (no excuses for that, though). So… anyways, thanks for bringing it up to my notice - I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

  14. Sameer Mishra Says:

I thought I would end it there (with my previous Comment) But Ashish your comment forced me to write again.

Firstly that word Suffer was wrong .what I was trying to say is –Some Other would not have same experience what I had.

Second those companies are not Tekriti Software I really appreciate your regular responses and believe that you like to clear fogs BUT I don’t know why did you compare with other companies. They have there rules and ethics and you have your own.
You’re an Entrepreneur you know things better than me. Hope you wouldn’t mind if I said any thing unbearable

    Thanks
    Sameer

  15. Startups.in/India Says:

@Sameer - Everything seems to be a puzzle to you. :) Anyways, I’m the one He created first.
