Delhi Bloggers Meet

Posted by Ashish on May 8th, 2006

In case you are not aware, Delhi has a decently popular blogging community. I am not at all regular at these meets since I think these meets become a little too generic or repetitive but few folks from BBC, UK were coming to catch the blogging scene in India and that got a few people excited about the meet.

I debated a lot on whether to go or not - I clearly didn’t want to have another generic discussion on “Why are people blogging in India” or “How is a blog culture evolving in the country” or “How is it different from the other countries” - I have had it a little too many times. But I ended up going there finally - the turnout was decent if not great and people seemed to be enjoying that.

Paavani has an article and some photos on the same that you may want to check out. I reached there a bit late, was there for a very short duration and was very silent. I guess these blog meets are not for me - unless the talks are over drinks (the group also went to a pub but that happened after the first couple of hours) or the agenda is something more focused or the topic is new. And it did appear that I am not as passionate about blogging as a lot others sounded there - I just write and then it acts as a wonderful marketing tool for my company Tekriti and can contribute to our corporate blogs through the same.

But the community has the right mix of people - so if you are one of the bloggers and are in Delhi area, you should drop by there in one of the meets.

Bill from BBC also has an article on the same here.

[…] The Delhi Bloggers seem to have had a peaceful meet this time around. Paavani has a detailed report and also has some pictures from the meet. Solzaire and Ashish give their version of the proceedings. Bill of BBC’s Digital Planet just managed to attend the event. […]

I have till date not attended even one bloggers meet thought I met a blog friend who was travelling through India. I too thought about going because of the BBC factor but I have such a poor sense of driection that I did not want to drive to IHC. Maybe, some other time.

It is really good to see that the blogger community is evolving in the country. The power of Blogs have been supressed for long but no more. I feel the answer can lie in community-blogs or group-blogs. The only reason why some blogs die prematuredly is because they lack the basic networking.
If any of you guys are interested check www.merinews.com. It is not a blog, though but a similar model that promotes participatory journalism and gives you a platform to promote your views to a larger number of audience. Even some eminent personalities write there. You can keep your Blog but at the same time post those articles in merinews. This will help you to reach out to a larger number of audience.
