What’s in a name?

Posted by Ashish on August 28th, 2005

Something interesting happened yesterday. I was in my car and driving out of the apartment complex gate to go to the office when I noticed somebody asking me for a lift. Now, a lot of people have cautioned me against letting strangers inside the car - but I still keep doing it, at times. And they have valid reasons - but that is not the point of this post.

The conversation started with the regular stuff as to what both of us do for a living? It was then I found out that he was a fashion designer and runs a boutique alongwith his wife AND his shop’s name was ‘Aakriti’. Now this is what interested me, and him, a lot - as the names of the both of our companies were similar - Tekriti and Aakriti. We had some good discussion around the word ‘Kriti’ - Hindi for Creativity - and that got me thinking a bit more on the use of some of the words for the companies in the tech sector. Now, ‘Kriti’ is one beautiful hindi word which sounds perfect and has the right meaning suitable for most of the businesses.

Coming to the names of the tech companies, there are a few words which are very widely used - ‘tech’ and ’soft’ probably being the top 2 (for obvious reasons). Consequentially, if you are registering a company name and have either of these 2 words in your company name - it’s almost certain that you will not get these names approved (we faced a lot of problems during registering our company name). So, a suggestion to all those who are in the process of thinking a name for their company, focus on the words from different languages - reason being that almost all combinations of good English words are already taken. And then there are so many beautiful words in other languages - ‘Kriti’ in Hindi is one such good example.
